Ranked choice voting covers several counting methods. IRV fills one seat by eliminating last place and transferring those ballots. STV fills several seats proportionally. The contingent vote lets voters mark a limited number of preferences, usually two or three.
Not counted here: party leadership and nominating contests, which are private elections.
Things to watch. Alaska votes on a second repeal initiative in November 2026, after the first failed by 0.24 points. Utah's local pilot expired on January 1, 2026, ending RCV in 23 cities. Nineteen states now ban it. Five Michigan cities have approved RCV and none can use it.
